Karrie graduated from the University of Maryland through the Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing Scholarship Program. As a young nurse, she worked in the Coronary Care Unit at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. It was there that she discovered her passion for patient and family education. After Karrie’s husband was diagnosed with melanoma in 1987, she and her family had a crash course in being on the “patient” side of the process.
Moving to Montana in 1990 with 3 artistic, exciting children presented Karrie with the opportunity and challenge to grow as a parent, nurse and community member and to gain expertise in dermatology. Karrie’s energy and passion for education motivated her to present skin cancer awareness and education programs throughout the state of Montana. The Dermatology Nurses’ Association (DNA) honored her efforts by presenting her with the Outstanding Community Service Award in 1999. Karrie served as the Awards Chairman for the DNA and is currently on the Board of Directors. She is also a director on the Dermatology Nursing Certification Board. Karrie enjoys her work as a nurse educator in dermatology, diabetes, wellness-preventive medicine, and obstetrics. In her free time, Karrie loves to paint, read, cook, do needlework, attend plays and concerts, hike, and cross-country ski.
Karrie is also strongly involved in the Montana arts community. Her recent participation on various area cultural arts boards enhances the creative tools she uses to connect to her clients. Karrie learns from the arts and her students’ input everyday. She is grateful for life and vitality!
